PLAY
Providing a variety of materials allows for numerous learning experiences through child-directed activities. As stated in the Community Day Care Act "50% of a child's time at nursery school must be spent in child directed activities".  During this time, the individual child chooses which type of play they wish to engage in.  Teachers supervise this time but are not actively involved in the selection of play itself except when requested to do so by the children or to redirect a child if it is required. Play, as a teaching method is very valuable.  Young children learn best through playful interaction with their environment.

TEACHER DIRECTED ACTIVITIES
Singing, arts and crafts, story time, show and tell, games, and snacks.

HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS

THEMES
Most program activities are theme based. Some of the topics the children will be exposed to during the school year are colours, shapes, five senses, special days & holidays and the seasons.

SNACKS
Please note that Southdale Nursery is a 100% NUT FREE facility. No nut products are allowed in the classroom at any time. We have students with both peanut and tree nut allergies; please help keep all of our children healthy.

FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are planned periodically throughout the school year and may include a bus trip.  The field trip varies from year to year depending on availability and funding.  Some examples of previous field trips include farm visits, McDonald's and The Children's Museum.

In addition to a bus trip, the children may also take short walking trips around the school area.  For example, walk to a post box, sight and sound walk in or around the school or walk to find specific items such as fallen leaves. Advance notice will be given for such events.
